This article is an attempt to understand a phenomenon highlighted by French philosopher Michel Foucault in hisHistory of Sexuality, vols. 2 and 3, namely, that of the positive appreciation of ‘old age’ in the late period of the Roman Empire, particularly in Seneca’s Stoicism. The positive value in the latter’s representation and imagery of old age serves as a focal point of individuals’ existences in their entirety and as a magnetic pole in the lives of individuals who strive to make (...) works of art out of the raw material of their existences—something we call ‘self-building’ practices, following Foucault. Moving beyond his work, we will further show that late Stoicism’s representation of old age is marked by an intellectual and ethical effort to activate another—indeed, opposed—direction for the passage of time, usually experienced as a painful dereliction of self. In this paper’s first section, I briefly discuss the Journal’s Global Ethics Forum and various ways development ethics has been related to global ethics . Regardless of which of these three conceptions of DE and GE one adopts, I believe that we should avoid two partial views of the causes of injustice: “explanatory nationalism,” which “makes us look at poverty and oppression as problems whose root cause and possible solutions are domestic” ; and “explanatory globalism” in which local and national (...) problems are ultimately due to global factors . In the second section I identify five topics and argue that development and global ethicists should emphasize them and their relations in future work. These future foci should be the following: inequality of power, agency and empowerment, democracy and development, corruption, and transitional justice. A final section concludes. (shrink)

The crimes committed by Germans under National Socialism would not have been possible without the existence of a web of shared ethical convictions. "Thick" terms such as "work", "people" or "community" are the nodal points of this intellectual construct. The contributions in this volume are not only concerned with the historical presentation of National Socialist normativity. Rather, they also make suggestions for the analysis of these concepts. This volume of translations unites three shorter works by Arthur Schopenhauer that expand on themes from his book The World as Will and Representation. In On the Fourfold Root he takes the principle of sufficient reason, which states that nothing is without a reason why it is, and shows how it covers different forms of explanation or ground that previous philosophers have tended to confuse. Schopenhauer regarded this study, which he first wrote as his doctoral dissertation, as an essential preliminary (...) to The World as Will. On Will in Nature examines contemporary scientific findings in search of corroboration of his thesis that processes in nature are all a species of striving towards ends; and On Vision and Colours defends an anti-Newtonian account of colour perception influenced by Goethe's famous colour theory. This paper (in German) uses Wittgenstein's concept of seeing aspects to understand the peculiarities of anamorphotic art. I aim to show that Wittgenstein's conception of aspect perception includes the idea of conceptual capacities as well as of bodily techniques and hence bridges the supposed divide between receptivity and spontaneity. A comparison is suggested with some aspects of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of perception.

This paper (in German) lays out two different conceptions of language as 'Spiel', which I call - appropriating a pair of expressions used by Wilhelm von Humboldt - 'Spiel' as 'ergon' and 'Spiel' as 'energeia'. The first one conceives of 'Spiel' as 'game', an abstract entity constituted by a set of rules; the second one conceives of 'Spiel' as 'play', a mode of being that is constituted by a certain kind of movement. I show how the metaphor of language as (...) 'Spiel' has been interpreted in both of these ways, but how, and why, historically, the first interpretation, specifying linguistic entities as rule-constituted entities of a certain kind, came to be superseded by the second interpretation, specifying 'play' as the mode of being of language itself, most prominently in the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Jacques Derrida. …Sampaio de Madureiras Studie stellt eher einen eröffnenden als einen abschileßenden Ansatz dar. Im Anschluß an ihre theoretischen Analysen geht es nun darum, die Untersuchung bezüglich der praktischen Bestimmungen dieser kommunikativen Gleichheit fortzusetzen. In praktischer Perspektive bleibt zu fragen, inwieweit die kommunikative Gleichheit in der Lage ist, „neuen Formen von Gleichgültigkeit und Herrschaft selbstreflexiv zu begegnen“.
